I have been thinking about this too.
  It has LOTS of advanced features that most do not use...

The Linux audio development peoples have made some work
that could become an alternative.
  http://jackit.sourceforge.net/	to connect audio programs together
and
  http://www.ladspa.org/		for simple effects plugins
I am not sure that anything more is needed for most users.
Some will of cause like to run it over a network - I do not know if
jackit (Jack) supports that yet.
