Will, could you please have a look to get this fixed in a proper way?
I'm also happy with some configure switch if everything else fails.

We had reasons for not converting to QString wrt calling D-BUS
functions.  But I think we had some solution for it which didn't make it
into SVN yet.  I'll investigate this once more.
