phonon4 qml/videographicsobject

we have just been wondering on IRC when and how to freeze phonon4
development (like officially).

right now all 3 phonon repositories have the following situation:
4.6/0.6: stable getting bugfixes ever so often
master: very few features over 4.6/0.6 plus under-QA'd graphicsview/qml1
support

so to turn master into 4.7 we will have to do one of the following
a) deactivate the qml1 bits and release
b) complete code review + api review (the present api, or rather the
exposed symbols needed by it is not very nice) + launch at least one rc and
allow testing for >=1 month

with a) we can do a release in perhaps a week, with b) we'd be looking at
march or even april.

now personally I am not convinced of the use nor quality of the qml stuff
(although it works for me...). it has been in master for more than half a
year and I have yet to get viable feedback on it at all. additionally only
the plasma media center people have expressed actual interest in p4 with
qml.

if we were already on qt5 with qml2 this would be a no-brainer, however
with qt4 and the graphicsview doing fast high-quality video playback is a
tricky thing to do (right) and so even after review and a release candidate
we'd still be looking at the possibility of ongoing support of the new api
should some application pick it up.

all that being said I personally would rather drop qml support entirely
from the phonon4 feature scope and instead push phonon4 asap into
maintenance mode so all the more focused work on phonon5 can start.

does anyone have strong reasons to release the qml stuff for phonon4?
