Something I forgot to mention: lowering the hardware device's volume 
will result in, say, 16-bit sound being played at a lower bit-depth. 
The mixing and volume adjustment should be done entirely by PA (possibly 
with a higher bit-depth).

If you use anything else than 0db on the sound card's hardware mixer, 
you lose sound quality.  So it's best to keep that at 0db and mess with 
volume only in software (again, probably at a much higher bit-depth in 
order to preserve as much quality as possible.)

That's another reason why I even care that master volume control in alsa 
is changing :)
