I've taken the liberty of create a script to do all of that (it is attached).  
It needs to be run with the name the user wants to use, otherwise it will 
fall back on the GECOS passwd field, or the user name (in that order).

BSD users should note that the amixer and /dev/sndstat stuff applies to Linux 
ALSA only, not sure what Christian wants to do about that.
