Compiling splay/mpeglayer3.cpp with g++-3.2 removes the problem as well. 

Now to figure out if it is a gcc-3.3 or old mpeglib bug..

I am using "Yes, You Can" from Jewel - 0304. It starts with some good bass, so I can tell if it is working within the first 5 seconds of the song.
