Ah -- that explains things. Yes, in JuK 1.95 (which you must have been using
if you were on KDE 3.1) things definitely were slower. However the whole
meta-data backend was rewritten between 1.95 and 2.0 (and to throw another
library into the mix -- JuK used to use id3lib which was slower than TagLib
or madlib).
