To provide useful multimedia software that integrates with KDE.

It seems to me that the real problem here is that aRts doesn't provide all 
the functionality needed to accomplish that.  This led people to go 
outside of aRts for things.

That's all the more reason to choose a more featureful system for KDE 4, to 
avoid the rat's nest of libraries piled together.
