artsd should respect the -r option, but you can see the used rate as one the first informations when running -l0.

I am graping for straws, but try -Dasymed to make it use the device directly. I've once seen problems in fragment sizes, where dmix requires specific sizes.

The direct ALSA programs wouldn't normally see resampling problems because they only have one level of configuration.
