Out of your writeup there was one thing that stuck out to me:

This is actually an issue for us since it would be required by kdelibs.  With 
the single exception of Qt we currently have a policy that libraries must be 
LGPL'ed (or something less restrictive like MIT, X, or BSD licenses).  What 
are the chances of a license change?
