sound card not working Red Hat 7.2

Friends, 
I am having problem with my sound card (Intel AC'97 Intel 810C motherboard). On installing Linux Red Hat 7.2, It was working well but recently, on logging on to root or my login, I get an error message " cannot load /dev/dsp (device not found). Sound server will continue with null output device." 
I have the file /dev/dsp in my system yet no sound.

What should I do?
