Sorry, this was a config problem. I had "custom sampling rate" selected, I think a setting left 
over from my previous laptop (it says "you may need to set the sampling rate to 48000 for a 
Yamaha sound card", which I had on my last laptop). 
 
I don't use sound players very much, at least, not demanding that they be precisely in tune!
