Hi!

I am just wondering, am I the only one (and my friends :-) experiencing severe
problems with xine_artsplugin and thumbnails? In addition to some
experiencing weird crashes of konqueror causing total non-responsiveness,
which have been mentioned here before, I tried to see what happens when I
start artsd from within gdb.

Here's what happens:

- - First of all, the thumbnail creation is slooow. It takes a very long time
before all the messages from xine about finding its plugins have come by.
However, this is (I think) only when first entering a directory with video
files.

- - Then, a couple of video files get processed correctly and the messages from
xine on the console seem fine (about finding frames etc)

However, sometimes suddenly everything stops and artsd does nothing anymore.
No more files are processed for thumbnail creation. One time artsd crashed
with a SIGPIPE saying there's something wrong with write_ in libc.

After waiting for a long time until artsd didn't do anything anymore, I did a
"ps aux|grep artsd|wc -l" and it came up with 198 entries!

It seems to me that xine_artsplugin can't really be considered stable.

I would love to help out and fix some of these issues (because I think they're
not just annoyances, they can hang your whole multimedia system, even till
after a relogin!) if someone shows me the way. Unfortunately, I have no
experience coding with xine, arts or video processing. But I can learn :)

So, is there someone who can elaborate on these issues or someone who is
experiencing them too? For now, I am turning off xine_artsplugin and hope
that distributors will too. It's a shame, because the concept of noatun et al
using xine is great!
