The problems with all approaches that require significant new developments is 
that these things are *huge*. You are talking about many man months, possibly 
man years. As Stefan said, arts is 80000 LOC. The GStreamer core is 50000 
LOC, and the plugins (without codecs like ffmpeg and avilib, only the >200 
elements) have 195000 LOC. 
So all talk about re-factoring, writing new code and so on does not help, 
unless you find people who want to do it.
