How can aRts know if there is a soundcard? Hmm, it could look at the error it 
gets when opening the device. OK, this might actually be possible to do, 
something like starting artsd with "server status=suspended".

Best would be a patch, of course. :-) You need to check the object for isNull
() before using it.
