[what happened - not STEPS TO REPRODUCE]

I had saved an image

In finder selected the file & right-clicked for 'Open with.. '
added krita to the list of apps to open with
opened the preferences dialog from menu (Krita/preferences...
closed the preferences dialog with the red button
