WORKAROUND: 

1) Delete or move your saved Krita/tiff files of your artwork. 

REASON: Krita will look for your previous files to load during the recent files
thumbnail splash screen. Somehow, one or more of those files became corrupted,
so deleting them fixed the issue because there was no longer files and/or file
path to find.
