I can reproduce the problem but not exactly as described in this report.

I use the same version of MacOS, on a macbook pro intel computer as Bruce.

If i select an album with JPEG or HEIF files, and run Slideshow with F9, all
work as expected.

But if i press the configure slideshow button, the dialog appears in full
screen. press close or ok button, give a black screen. I can always access to
the main menu of digiKam on the top. i can restart the slideshow by the View
menu and contents and bar on the bottom reappears. 

Pressing stop buttom give a black screen. Going to main menu on top and quit
digiKam will restore the slideshow configure dialog while few second and
digiKam stop normally.

I suspect that slideshow configure dialog is the problem here. Perhaps t here
is a wrong setup with this dialog which break the full screen mode.
