Sorry to say but it still doesn't work for me.
I really would like to understand what I'm doing wrong...
Here's how I proceeded to be sure to start from a fresh installation:
I deleted the old apps
I also deleted:
~/Library/Preferences/digikamrc, 
~/Library/Preferences/digikam_systemrc, 
~/Library/Caches/digikam and 
~/Library/Application Support/digikam
I downloaded version 8, installed it and gave it all the necessary rights (see
attached screenshots) 
But the camera list is still empty...
