Thomas made a commit to master branch to remove those \0 characters on import. 
That should already be available in any version compiled from master (5.1.80)
but will not show up in the 5.1 branch.  You should be able to easily switch
between the 5.1 and master branch as there are no differences in the data file.
 However, always keep backups, just in case.
