The response starts with php warnings:
digikam.webservices: parseResponseListAlbums: "<br />\n<b>Deprecated</b>: 
strip_tags(): Passing null to parameter #1 ($string) of type string is
deprecated in <b>/home/www/photos/include/ws_functions/pwg.categories.php</b>
on line <b>324</b><br />\n<br />\n<b>Deprecated</b>:  strip_tags(): Passing
null to parameter #1 ($string) of type string is deprecated in
<b>/home/www/photos/include/ws_functions/

That's why it fails. There was also a similar issue a bit further in the
process.

I made a pull request in piwigo to get those warnings fixed:
