I can confirm that this is an issue with gperf 3.0.3 shipped by default with
macOS, up to the current Big Sur 1.6 (20G165). That version was released in
2007 (!):  http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/gperf

Please install gperf 3.1 (from 2017) with brew or macPorts.
