Hi Maik, 

I can reproduce the dysfunction under MacOS BigSur and last 7.4.0 daily build.
I used the D800 NEF files available here :

http://www.rawsamples.ch/index.php/en/nikon

Thumbnails are fine, preview is broken, and editor loading is a very small
version. Note that libraw code used in background is the current implementation
from github. Exiv2 is last stable 0.27.5.
