Here is the debug output of Kate. I imagine the problem here is because of the
lock file issue, but I'm not sure in which directory that lock file would be
created. however. 

Unrelated, but the `Icon theme "breeze" not found.` line is also evident, as
there is at least one missing icon in the global menu
