SORRY. MY MISTAKE.
That should be
sudo port install apple-gcc42-devel
note the -devel at the end. That's important :-)
So if you've already installed (or are currently installing) apple-
gcc42 do :
'sudo port clean --all apple-gcc42'
'sudo port uninstall apple-gcc42'
'sudo port install apple-gcc42-devel'
