Hi Kevin,
   OK, that's an interesting place to at least start looking.
Comparing two KDE machines here, both Gentoo and both running the
lastest Gentoo stable 4.7.4, on the failing machine here are some of
the first things I see different between the two .xsession-errors
files which seems to be possibly oriented toward not finding mysql
which indeed isn't on this system, but nether is it on the system that
doesn't have problems:

There's a lot more like this in the file in case I didn't copy enough
and you need to see more.

Is this at least related to the problem or am I on the wrong track?

Also please note, along the lines to some of Duncan's comments about
all the stuff KDE provides, I don't really use kdepim, at least not
that I know of, and I don't use KDE Mail either. If that somehow makes
it easier to test potential solutions it won't actually cause me any
real problems here.
