agreed - I always have desktop effects disabeled.
and yes, I have read the storys w. regard to nvidia drivers etc, which doesn't 
apply here (using intel onboard graphics, which should be well supported by 
X).
still, the difference in responsiveness between kde 3,5 / kde4 is tremendous.
