I've not seen any indication that that is being worked on.  The nearest I can 
offer you is that you can have Activities with each activity having a 
different background.  If you use the Activity Bar you can switch between them 
as quickly as using the pager for desktops, although it takes up more screen-
space.  If you want to try this out, 
http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma#How_can_I_add.2Fremove_an_activity.3F tells you 
how to set up the activities, and the following paragraph gives you a link to 
instructions for getting the activity switcher bar working.
