Talking about kipi-plugins in my other message made me check out Gwenview.  It 
offers the following options:

-Import Exif
Import IPTC
Import XMP
Edit Captions

Which presumably would preserve the work you did earlier.  AND it doesn't mess 
with your directory system :-)
