Have you looked at the Multimedia settings in the Control Center (now 
called "System Settings").

You will see several subclasses of: Audio Output.

For each of these, "ALSA default output" should be at the top of the 
list.  4.2 seems to do this by default but earlier versions this was not 
the case.  With some early versions, you had to check "Show advanced 
devices" to select ALSA.
