This is in kmail?  The nearest I can think of is a white exclamation mark in a 
red circle.  If that's it, it's when you mark a message or thread Important 
(which has implications for auto-expiry).  It's removed by Message > Mark > 
Remove Important mark

Other than that, I've no idea.
