Yes.

Once I got stuff to compile, I didn't do anything else except to restart 
my KDE-4.2 session.

Check to see if mPlayer will play the video that you aren't getting a 
thumb for.

IIUC, that would only be necessary if you are using a very recent 
snapshot of x264.  If mPlayer compiles OK, it shouldn't be necessary.
