I have seen this behaviour frequently on *buntu installations, intel+sis 
graphics.
removing 'quiet splash' from the 'kernel..' line in /boot/grub/menu.lst solved 
the issue every time (at the 'cost' of seeing all the text messages passing 
by upon boot, instead of a splash image :)
