[kde-linux] Blank desktop and no panel on KDE 4.1 login

When I log into a KDE 4.1 session, I now always get a blank white desktop, and 
no panel. Right clicking on the background anywhere (including top right, and 
anywhere along the bottom where the panel should be) doesn't do anything. How 
can I restore things?

This seemed to happen first when I switched to another X session (a KDE3 one) 
and back again.
