[kde-linux] alsamixer error

when I run mplayer to view a DVD I get a constantly flashing error message in 
a small box. The sound works, the video plays, but I get this annoying 
message:
[AO_ALSA]   Mixer load error. Invalid Arguement
when I run alsamixergui I get this error:
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: invalid arguement ( and a close 
button)
running Debian Etch.
