You should leave the html file associations as they 
were--associated with Konqueror. Then open the KDE Control 
Center to KDE Components/Component Chooser/Web Browser and set 
firefox as your default browser. This will let Kmail open html 
links in Firefox, but local html files will still open in 
Konqueror. And, hopefully, your problem with kdeinit processes 
will be abated.
