[kde-linux] KsCD - no sound

After one minor tweak all the buttons (play/pause, stop. previous, next,
eject and quit) do what they should. The window shows that the CD has been
found and is playing.  But no sound comes from the speakers.

The sound system is enabled and all systems notification work perfectly. I
am using KDE 3.3 as supplied by Debian 3.1.

What have I missed?  All advice will be gratefully received.
