Just to repeat, in case you missed it in my first post:
You can disable theming in kdm (edit $KDE_CONF_DIR/kdm/kdmrc, set
UseTheme from "true" to "false"), after which kdm behaves in a way like
xdm (starts a greeter, uses simpler routines to draw background).
Then you can still benefit of the advantages kdm offers over xdm; you'll
loose some eye-candy, though ;-)
