Although I had written 'somewhere in konqueror', I really meant 'somewhere in 
kcontrol'.  And that's why I had onlyh ever found it by accident.  I wonder 
why setting preview for sound files in kcontrol doesn't have this effect?

Thanks - whatever the reason, the solution is just that.  It's working fine
