Getting back to your problem.... Are you using a USB keyboard? Occasionally my 
USB mouse doesn't work after starting an X session. If I unplug it and plug 
it back in it is recognised and starts to work. You could give this a shot. I 
believe this began with KDE 3.5.6 and I don't recall it happening since my 
upgrade to 3.5.7.
