[kde-linux] Can't login via kde - hangs when "initializing peripherals"

Subsequent to my previous messages I tried the latest
kernel (silly me) and things got worse - I can no longer
start kde after init 3 and a 'startx'. Gnome still works.

I got the following output after an 'init 3' then 'su' then
startx.

xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.2949

Does this give anyone a clue to what is happening?

Additionally before I updated the kernel (well I didn't really -
it does it automatically through yum) :

I don't know what to make of this, if anything.
