I have seen it happen occasionally.  When you have got your contacts back, 
either as Donatas told you, or from a backup CD, it's also worth while 
creating a permanent backup.  I create one called std.vcf.sav, and overwrite 
it occasionally when I'm aware that new contacts have been added.
