[kde-linux] updated install

I've been running Slackware since 1999. Due to recent hardware problems I've
just moved to a fresh install of version 10.2, up probably several versions
from whatever I was running before (said hardware problems trashed my HD so I
can't even say for sure what version that was, but I think it was probably
9.2 or thereabouts).
I'm seeing Kmail from time to time telling me that it's compacting folders
when I haven't told it to do so -- is there some way to turn this off? I'm
running on a rather resource-limited machine at the present time compared to
what I was running on, and every little bit helps.
Also, all of my "slider thingies" were gold before, and now they're all
blue. I've tried fiddling with all sorts of settings but can't seem to find
where to fix that.
Any other suggestions with regard to things I might fiddle with that would
minimize the use of resources would be appreciated.
And, any time I switch to the tty where I fired it up, I'm *STILL* seeing a
constant stream of errors, the tail end of which I see when I'm shutting KDE
and X down. This has been an ongoing thing ever since I started running KDE,
is this sort of thing ever going to get fixed?
