Last night, before I went to bed, I went through ~/.kde/share/config and 
deleted any files starting with kate that looked like Kate config 
files, then did the same in ~/.kde/share/apps/kate -- killed all files 
there.  Started it up and it *seemed* to work properly, but I'm not 
completely sure yet.  I haven't posted on it because I wanted to add a 
few icons I use and see if that works.

Right now my guess is that there was a problem with a config file.  
Perhaps it was written during one version and the next version on up 
had problems with it.  That's just a guess, though.  I'll post more 
when I know if the problem is gone or not.  Either way, there's a bug 
and the behavior under this bug can be really odd, but I don't know if 
I can reproduce it.  I don't know if it's a bug worth investigating if 
it's caused my a malformatted config file produced by an early version, 
since most people that would have had that version (this problem is 2 
years old, at least) would likely have upgraded and it seems I'm the 
only one complaining.
