First, before taking the knee-jerk reaction and ditching SuSE, please read the 
FAQ on OpenSuSE's wiki about the agreement. The agreement will NOT be 
affecting Novell's commitment to open-source software. Second, the search 
feature you refer to is a SuSE only patch to KDE that is not present in other 
distributions.
