In the KDE config section, which varies from distro to distro as to
where it is, look for Peripherals then Display.  You should see a tab on
the top that says Size and Orientation.  You may have to add options to
the xorg.conf file but you can select the resolution there.

You can also use the key combination Ctrl Alt and the + or - key to go
up or down in size.  Both should work.  I like this one though.
