I don't know about other ways, but one is using a second login to
another X session, and right before logging in to the second, copy the
appropriate one of two different copies of /etc/X11/xorg.conf to that
name/location. I just tested today using 1792x1344 on tty7, 1280x960 on
tty8, and 1024x768 on tty9. Just save suitable copies of xorg.conf with
names such as xorg.conf.800x600 and xorg.conf.1280x1024 with suitably
set Modes in Section "Screen".
