[kde-linux] HAL (hell) & D-Bus

I started getting error messages when I tried to mount my CD, floppies 
and ZIP with the desktop device icons -- that service requires HAL.  So, 
I updated D-Bus and HAL.  I rebooted and checked to see that both 
daemons started (then did).

So, KDE starts up and my desktop device icons are GONE. :-(

I checked the Control Center and they are still enabled.

Anybody have any idea what I did or where to look to fix it?
