[kde-linux] KDEInit could not launch 'kwrite'

I've met this often in Mandriva, and always solved it with 'xhost 
+localhost' but on this Debian Sarge installation that command results 
in 'xhost:  unable to open display " "'.

What's wrong?  What can I do about it?
