[kde-linux] Keyboard layout produces 'err' icon

With x.org 6.9 the en_US layout was dropped. I wonder somehow you've got

I fixed the problem by changing the XkbLayout line in my 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf :-
Section "InputDevice"
     Identifier "Keyboard1"
     Driver "kbd"
     Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
     Option "XkbLayout" "us"
     Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
     Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin"
